What is the Australian Qualifications Framework?
The Australian Qualification Framework defines and controls the level of education each Qualification title represents. Its system makes it easier for the students to pursue their education as there is a clear track to follow. AQF also known as the nationalized standardized system helps us avoid confusion caused by education levels.
In a previous post we discussed the difference between colleges and universities in Australia but this article here will go into further detail.
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is made of 10 levels. The first level is considered the minimum recognised qualification and the 10th level is considered the highest level qualification recognised in Australia.
Level 1- Certificate I
At this level graduates will have knowledge and skills for initial work, community involvement and further learning, they will undertake defined routine activities, and will identify and report simple issues. they will apply knowledge with stable context and narrow parameters. Volume of learning is for 0.5- 1 years.
Example- Certificate I In Business Administration- Aims to provide students with knowledge and skills in business administration accompanied by a broad range of relevant generic business skills. After the completion of this course you can work as (Executive personal Assistant, Office Administrator, Project Assistant.)
Level 2- Certificate II
Graduates at this level will have basic technical and procedural knowledge of a defined area of work and learning. They apply methods, tools, materials available to undertake defined activities, provide solutions to limited problems. volume of learning is for 0.5-1 years.
Example- Certificate II in Electronics- It aims in training a student in assembling electronic components, conducting quality tests, repairing basic electronic apparatus faults by replacement of components. After the completion of the course you can work as an (Electronic Trades- person).
Level 3- Certificate III
Graduates at this level will have detailed technical, theoretical and procedural knowledge of a specific area of work i.e, applying methods to complete daily activities and provide solutions to incalculable and doubtful problems. They will apply knowledge with stable context and broad parameters. Volume of learning is for 1-2 years.
Example- Certificate III in travel- trains you for a position in retail or wholesale travel sector specializing into corporate, domestic or international sales. after the completion of the course you can work as a CONSULTANT (domestic/international travel consultant, customer service agent, cruise consultant,mobile and online travel agent and so on…).
Level 4- Certificate IV
Graduates at this level will have broader theoretical knowledge of a specific area of work, that is to complete routine activities and provide solutions and skills to changing contexts within established parameters. The volume of learning is for around 0.5- 2 years.
Example- Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping- this qualification includes preparing and lodging business and installments and activity statements and provide advice or dealing with the commissioner on behalf of a taxpayer in relation to activity statements. After the completion of this course you can work as a BAS agent or a contracts bookkeepers.
Level 5- Diploma
Graduates at this level will apply skills and knowledge to demonstrate judgement and defined responsibility in changing contexts and within broad but established parameters. Volume of learning is around 1-2 years.
Example- Diploma of hospitality management- It helps us prepare for roles where you will operate independently. take responsibility for others and make operational business decisions. After the completion of this course you can work as (Client and Customer Service Manager).
Level 6- Advanced Diploma /Associate Degree
Graduates at this level will have to perform,analyse and transmit solutions to complex problems. They will have to provide judgement and specialist advice within broad parameters. Volume of learning is typically for around 1.5-2 years.
Example- Advanced Diploma In Graphic Design- It will help you develop your design skills with a high degree of Innovation, making you highly employable. the studies include advertising and marketing, design business, motion graphics, cultural branding and so on…After the completion of this course you can work as (Support Staff Member in advertising agencies, Art and Design Studios- Press Print Industries).
Level 7- Bachelors Degree
Graduates at this level will apply knowledge and skills in contexts that require self -directed work and learning. They will have to evaluate information and generate solutions to complex problems. This degree is for approximate 3-4 years of learning.
Example- Bachelor of Psychological Science- During this degree you will study the foundations of Psychology and learn about research methods and statistics in following areas such as personality, biological psychology and learning, cognition and perception, development and social psychology and psychology of abnormality. Completion of 4 years in Psychology is an important step towards registration as a Psychologist in Australia. An additional 2 years of practice is required to apply as the registered Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia. After the completion of this course you have various career Opportunities such as (Personnel Services, Human Resources, Organizational Behavior, Industrial Relations, Data Analyst, Life Coach, Brand Manager, Educational Officer, Developmental Officer, Community and Social Services and so on.. )
Level 8- Bachelors Honors Degree/ Vocational Graduate Certificate/ Vocational Graduate Diploma/ Graduate Certificate/ Graduate Diploma
Graduates at this level will have to advance their communication skills and methods in order to analyse, evaluate, transform and generate solutions to critical and complex problems. They will have to provide well developed judgement as practitioners or learners. Volume of learning is typically 1 year following the bachelors degree.
Example- Bachelors of Arts honors in Social Work- By honors it is meant that is a higher Academic Standard Courses it requires In depth Study of the subject Matter. It is understanding of various theories Of Social Work. It can be done after the completion of The Bachelors Degree. After the completion of this course you can work as a District consultant, Welfare Officer, Senior Manager, Project Coordinator, Labor Welfare Officer, Practice Head, Medical Social worker, Consultant and so on…
Level 9 – Masters degree (Research)/ Masters Degree (course Work)/ Masters degree (Extended)
Graduates at this level will have expert, specialized technical skills to independently reflect on complex information, problems, concepts and theories. they will have to research and apply theories and interpret skills and ideas to specialist and non specialist audiences.Volume of learning is typically 1-2 years
Example- Masters of Information Communication And Technology- This course helps you develop solutions to real Problems in team and Individual environments, manage communication between upper management and technology specialists, deal with social and ethical issues like computer hacking, software piracy and security breaches. After the completion of this Course you can work as (Systems Analyst, Information Technology Consultant, Information System Administrator, Software and Applications Trainer, Systems Engineer, Security Engineer and so on…)
Level 10- Doctoral or Higher Doctoral Degree
Graduates at this level are experts in engaging, evaluating, developing, adapting and implementing methodologies to extend and redefine existing knowledge. they generate knowledge and make a substantial contribution to an area of professional practice. Volume of learning is typically 3-4 years
Example- Legal Science Doctorate- The Professional Doctorate in Legal Science combines course work with research dissertation to enable advanced study and reflection on practice in professional field of law. After the completion of this course you have various career opportunities such as (Lecturer, Senior Research Officer, Lawyer, Solicitor, Barrister, Judge, Magistrate, Registrar, Company Director and so on…)
AQF helps in developing tracks (pathways) which in turn assists people to move between education and training sectors by helping people identify the base of prior learning, including credit transfer and experience. It gives a recognition of National and International qualifications offered in Australia.
